How To Scout an Opponent Using Hoopsalytics
For some Coaches, an opponent’s team and individual VPS will tell them all they need to know. At certain levels, just watching the lay-up lines before a game will do.
But if you’re really interested in adding (or saving) points to your team’s efforts, scouting an opponent using Hoopsalytics should help generate insights and strategy that could turn a .500 season into a playoff team, and a playoff team into a champion.
In the Hoopsalytics Player & Lineup Stats, there are multiple box scores that are all video-linked: Offense (Off. PPP, shot attempts, etc.) Defense (deflections, defensive fail and praise, points allowed, number of possessions, charges, etc.), Key Stats (customizable as are all the box scores) and Shooting (each player’s and team’s (and lineups) shots at the rim (with rate and percentages) short mid-range (5-13 ft.), (the dreaded) long mid (13ft. to the 3pt. line), all with rate and percentages as well.
There’s also a Scouting box score. From the menu list of over 100 stats, you can choose which stats you’d like to see on one page for your upcoming opponent. VPS tells a lot of the story so add that. What’s their best lineup in terms of Net PPP? or what’s each player’s (and lineups) +/-. Add them if you like.
Then, using the visual Timelines, check out the opponent’s rotations. Who’s starting and who’s doing what? who’s coming in and when, and what happens, statistically and during their playing time together when certain groups are on the floor. You can see each group’s +/-, as well as each player’s and groups shots, assists, fouls, rebounds, steals – all video-linked.
Click on the interactive Shot Chart to see what kind of shots your opponent is taking and from where. You can isolate on any particular area of the floor to see shot attempts, rate, percentages. A opposing player may be 51% on right corner three’s and 25% on left side of the floor 3’s. All shots in the Shot Chart are also linked to video.
Using your A.I. Assistant Coach, you can ask which of your opponent lineups are most vulnerable to pressure. Or which players or lineups are not as strong – or, really strong, defensively. That will inform your own decisions on how to attack. Ask what rotations, based on your season stats, would be best against a zone, or pack line defense.

Hoopsalytics can break down multiple scout games quickly. When you get the results, ask your A.I. Knowing your opponent’s plays and calls will help your team be better prepared.
In under 15 clips you can create a film session that is informative and memorable.
Or click on their Transition possessions to see their habits. Baseline out of bounds, sideline out of bounds, all tagged. Playing the right defense against your opponent’s BLOB plays might save you 2-4 pts. That matters in a close game.
Having a breakdown of your opponent’s games will help to recognize tendencies and trends. You can copy and print the scouting report for your team, as well as grant each player and coach access to the account to watch film and read the scouts.
