Every two weeks we’ll release a batch of real questions from Hoopsalytics coaches to help stimulate and assist coaches in asking the types of questions that get the most results.

Here’s our most recent questions (1/1/2026):

-if you were playing my team what would your scouting report be?

-what’s my best starting lineup and why and what parts of the floor can I get my players to take their best shots?

-how is my big man coach doing?

-make me an infographic for my team in the style of Edward Tufte with lots of visualizations

-what emphasis & changes will improve our weaknesses?

-Using my team’s player and lineup data, what are the three optimal lineups for these scenarios: The highest efficiency lineup that balances scoring and defense (consider ORtg, DRtg, Net Rating, spacing, and rebounding), The best defensive lineup for forcing turnovers (prioritize opponent TOV%, steals, deflections, and low foul risk), and the best end-of-game lineup that combines scoring with ball security (focus on clutch scoring, low TOV%, FT%, and inbound reliability) excluding guys who have played less than 2 hours of playing time.

-how can “player” make improvements for the next 15 games?

-what is the biggest statistical difference between wins and losses for this team?

-Evaluate whether increasing our offensive pace would improve overall team performance. Compare our current offensive pace to a faster-paced approach by analyzing possession length, total possessions per game, offensive efficiency, and turnover risk. Assess how a faster pace would affect shot quality, transition opportunities, and defensive balance. Identify which players on our roster are best suited for this style of play based on speed, decision-making, conditioning, and ball-handling ability. Conclude with clear coaching recommendations on when and how to implement a faster pace.

-Give me an in-depth self scout of our team in all five phases (transition offense, half-court offense, transition defense, half court defense, and baseline out of bounds offense, and defense). Please include detailed breakdowns of the team and individual players.

-For practice tomorrow, base on the stats what areas should I spend most of my two hour practice on? Also give me a practice plan for tomorrow based on what we need.

-Can you break down our rebounding issues? What would be the biggest return on our investment for improving rebounding? Base your results on the rebounding map and season stats of rebounding this season.

-At what point in the game is player fatigue having an effect on our team?

-I need an in depth scouting report of my upcoming opponent. What offense would work best and what defense would work best against them?

-Breakdown this win for me, is there anything I could have missed or we could have done better in it?

Thank you for reading, and Happy New Year!
