How to Track Bad Fouls

Do you hate giving up unnecessary free throws? I especially hate fouls in-the-bonus and fouled three-point attempts. Only Hoopsalytics can track these and other different kinds of fouls for you, which can help make your team play smarter defensively.
Tracking Foul Types
Every game scored with Hoopsalytics has a complete breakdown of all fouls committed, including:
- Non-Shooting Fouls (not so bad)
- Fouls on 2 Pt. Shots (not great)
- And-1 Twos and And-1 Threes (bad)
- Fouls on 3 Pt. Shots (really bad)
- And the one I hate most of all: Non-Shooting Fouls in-the-bonus (really, really bad)
Here’s how to see the foul types breakdown for your team:
1. Go to Player Stats, and in Key Stats click on the details magnifier icon next to Fouls:
2. You’ll see what kind of fouls each player commits, either as a number or as a percent. You can view this for a single game, or multiple games of your choice. And like everywhere else in Hoopsalytics, clicking on any number shows video clips of those foul events.
Here’s how the foul types breakdown looked for my team last season:
I’ve highlighted my pet peeve – the non-shooting foul in-the-bonus. But you should find the rest of the foul-type data valuable as well.
Next to layups, free throws are typically the most efficient scoring opportunity. A team who shoots 70% from the line has 1.4 points-per-possession (PPP) for those two free throws. Your average NCAA college team hovers around 1.0 PPP. So avoiding free throws makes sense analytically.
Tracking foul types is one way you can use Hoopsalytics to win more games. This is available for all teams using the Hoopsalytics system, and you won’t find them all in any other stats platform.
