What is Value Point System or VPS?
VPS is an acronym for the Value Point System, a statistic created to look at the efficiency of a player and to give a more well-rounded indication of overall player performance.
A VPS of 1 is considered average, while a VPS of 2+ is excellent.
The formula for VPS is as follows:
Points+Rebounds+2x Assists+2x *Recoveries
divided by
2x (FG missed)+Free Throw’s missed+2x Fouls+2x Turnovers
*Recoveries include steals, blocks and charges. Players are awarded one and a half points (1.5) toward their total recoveries for every charge they take.
Steps:
- Add the total number of recoveries (steals, blocks and charges).
- Multiply the total number of recoveries by 2.
- Multiply the number of assists by 2.
- Add the number of points and rebounds to the (Assists x 2) and (Recoveries x 2) to get the numerator.
- Multiply the number of missed field goals by 2.
- Multiply the number of fouls by 2.
- Multiply the number of turnovers by 2.
- Add (Missed Field Goals x 2) to the number of missed free throws, the (Fouls x 2), and (Turnovers x 2) to get the denominator.
- Divide the numerator by the denominator to calculate the Value Points.
Statistics including assists, charges and turnovers help players focus on working as a team, and therefore boost their capabilities to become better players.
