AI Basketball Stats

basketball stats using artificial intelligence

As the world shifts toward more and more A.I. generated content, Hoopsalytics remains a human-scored basketball stats and analytics platform. That’s not because we are against emerging technology, far from it. But the fact is A.I. is not quite ready to accurately tag all basketball scoring.

There are a number of reasons for this. Sometimes, the camera may miss the action. Our trained scorekeepers are able to deduce certain facts, even without video of the event, such as a change in the scoreboard, or by hearing audio of a foul called by the referee. Other times, uniform numbers are not so easily read, with AI assigning shots and made baskets incorrectly.

Plus, basketball tagging of multiple events in short time spurts takes nuance. For example, a player drives to the hoop for a contested lay-up that is partially blocked, resulting in a miss, and let’s say an offensive rebound, with a missed putback, followed by a deflection and another OReb, and another shot, that’s made and draws a foul. Our trained scorekeeping team will be able to slow down the video of those types of plays to tag events correctly.

Precise stats are hugely important the higher the level of play, possibly resulting in scholarships and contracts. It’s important to get it right, and Hoopsalytics does. Also, since all Hoopsalytics stats are linked to video, your team’s basketball stats are easily verifiable.

We’ve been approached and have reached out to AI companies regarding generating game stats. The technology is coming, but it is not there yet. Until that time, Hoopsalytics will continue to provide top-tier, quality-controlled basketball stats and analytics, with trained human scorers.
